SCOTTISH LAWN BOWLING
THE ROCK BOWLING CLUB
The Rock Bowling Club is aptly named, being situated in the shadow of Dumbarton Castle, and on the edge of the River Clyde.
Our riverside situation enables us to view all the comings and goings on the River Clyde, and over the years we have had the privilege of seeing many fine ships sailing past our club and a regular sight is the world famous paddle steamer The Waverly.
The Rock Bowling Club was officially inaugurated on the 7th August 1884, after more than a year's effort to find a suitable piece of ground, and the money to develop it. The first green was laid and opened for play on 11th June 1886. In 1889 the green was extended and in 1919 was brought up to its present size.
The first clubhouse was a wooden building and was erected in 1888 at a cost of £36. Over the years alterations have taken place, mainly in 1978, 1981 and this year 1999.
Throughout its history the club has won many trophies and have had the honour of one of its members, Mr John Weir, being the president of the Scottish Bowling Association. The club has also supplied presidents to the Dunbartonshire Bowling Association. These were John Lithgow in 1930, John Jamieson in 1950 and William McKinlay in 1984 which was our centenary year. We are also honoured to be joint top in supplying players to play for the County Team.
