THE ARTS

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL                  www.eif.co.uk

13TH AUGUST - 2ND SEPTEMBER, 2000

From the very beginning in 1947 the founders of the Edinburgh International Festival set themselves very clear objectives. Their aim was to unite Europe through culture and enhance the artistic life of the city, Britain and Europe by putting together the best possible programme of events featuring the finest artists from around the world.

Over the years they have adhered firmly to this policy and this is reflected in the splendid programme the organisers have put together for this millennium year festival.

As a recent survey showed that nearly 60% of visitors pre-booked their tickets it is important to pre-plan your festival activities and book up as soon as possible. Sometimes there is the temptation to wait until the critics have had the opportunity to make their views known. If you wait until this stage there is every chance that the performance you want to see will be fully booked. The quality of events and artistes are such that there is little gamble in booking in advance.

Running in parallel to the International Festival is the equally famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This year the Fringe will play host to over 500 performing companies.

The Fringe saw its origins in the eight theatre groups that turned up uninvited to the first official festival in 1947. They set up their performances in more obscure venues away from the main centre of theatrical activity - and the Fringe was born.
By 1954 the growing number of performing companies taking part in the Fringe came to realise that life would be easier, and the financial risk less, if they combined their efforts to publicise their performances and sell their tickets. In 1958 this initiative led to the opening of a central information and booking office. Since then the Fringe has grown into the largest arts festival in the world.
