For a country of its size Scotland has produced more than its fair share of remarkable historical characters and modern day inventors. Its poets and authors enjoy worldwide acclaim and medical discoveries made by Scots have revolutionised the way the world cares for its sick.

With the exception of the moon it would appear that as fearless explorers, traders and missionaries the Scots had the knack of turning up everywhere first. And, more importantly, having got there been able to make the most of their opportunities.
