Its ancient past is all around from the Ardoch Roman Camp near Auchterarder to the Pictic Stones at Meigle Museum near Blairgowrie. History comes to life in its castles and stately homes. At Loch Leven on Perthshire's southern border the visitor can tour the castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent almost a year in captivity.

Among the sights and attractions ready to cast a spell on the visitor is the world's highest beech hedge at Meikleour outside Blairgowrie, Scotland's largest enclosed glen - Glen Lyon -and the wooded gorge at Killiecrankie where the Jacobites won a famous victory in 1689.

South of Killiecrankie is the town of Pitlochry through which the river Tummel flows. Visitors can watch salmon leap upstream at Pitlochry Dam's fish ladder. At Aberfeldy there is the stunning waterfalls that inspired Robert Burns to write the poem "The Birks of Aberfeldy" The falls still turn the millstones at the beautifully restored Aberfeldy Water Mill which is an award winning visitor attraction.

A few miles away at loch Tay is the fascinating Scottish Crannog Centre where archaeologists have reconstructed one of the ancient dwellings that ringed the loch's edge around 2,500 years ago.
