DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

More and more people are discovering the pleasures of visiting this area. If golf is your sport there are 32 courses throughout the region, there are five major salmon and sea trout rivers. There are hundreds of miles of spectacular cycling and walking routes. There is a never-ending programme of ceilidhs, village fairs, Scottish games, country dances concerts and children's' entertainment's. As for the capstone project ideas that explore more of these topics, they are often collected in a list at the main page.

Within this region is the famous Gretna Green where the former blacksmiths' shops recall the days when young lovers from England would run away to Scotland to marry because no parental consent was required north of the border.

Dumfries is the commercial capital of the region with things to see and do for visitors of all ages. There is a Camera Obscura from which on a clear day an outstanding bird's eye view of the surrounding area can be obtained.

For fans of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, Dumfries has much to offer. Ellisland Farm just to the north of the town, is where Burns eked out a living. It is now a museum with audiovisual displays and a riverside walk. In the town itself there is Burns' House, the Globe - his favourite pub, The Burns Centre and his final resting place, the Burns Mausoleum.

At Kirkbean stands the cottage where John Paul Jones, one of the founding fathers of the US navy, was born. His adventurous life is recounted in a fascinating cottage museum, which includes a recreation of his cabin aboard his War of Independence flagship, the Bonhomme Richard.

At the Glen Trool Centre near Bargrennan in the New Galloway Forrest you can visit the site of Bruce's Stone, overlooking the loch and marks the site of one of Robert the Bruce's early victories over the English. The Merrick (at 2,764 feet, the regions highest peaks) can be climbed from here and there are a host of other walks, both high and low level, throughout the park.

Wigton, Scotland's Book Town, is a must for enthusiastic readers of every form of the printed word. Here you will find over a dozen general interest and speciality booksellers catering for every interest imaginable.

Whenever you come to Dumfries and Galloway - and whatever you come for, we are sure that like most, you will want to come again.
