The City Merchant Restaurant - Candleriggs, Glasgow. 00 44 (0) 141 553 1577
Glasgow as tourist mecca is on a high. Tony Matteo of the City Merchant Restaurant in the wonderfully revamped Candleriggs says, "Obviously July, August & September are peak months but all year round 'foreign' accents are on the increase. Leading the invasion are the English, who have nothing but praise for the city and its surrounding countryside."

Regulars visit Glasgow 2/3 times a year and they tell friends. A network of contacts and communication has evolved over the years. I'm often asked when other branches of the City Merchant will be opening down south, so I'd like to think we have helped Scotland's improving image of friendliness, good food and service".

Asked what is most popular on the menu, Tony replies "Scottish produce prepared in a traditional, simple style, usually seafood. They seek and take your advice, so you have to produce the goods as well as price fairly. Our Fish Market Extras, listed on the blackboard, feature around a dozen choices, this changes almost daily."
The advice to the locals is, develop an accent!
Tony says "The Tourist Board and the City have invested and worked tremendously hard to attract these visitors. They arrive with a smile of anticipation, whatever the weather, its up to us to provide a warm welcome, good food and above all, informed, efficient service".
You get all that at the
